Upper Short Creek (WFPO)

Project Description

The Upper Short Creek Watershed Project seeks to reduce damaging flood risks for the community of Colorado City, Arizona, and neighboring Hildale, Utah. Short Creek has experienced major flood events, including a devastating 2015 flood that caused loss of life and severe damage. These floods have reshaped the stream channel, reducing its capacity to safely carry high flows and leaving local roads, utilities, and property vulnerable during storm events.

The project focuses on improving flood protection through potential measures such as targeted channel improvements, erosion‑control features, and other structural and non‑structural options identified in the Preliminary Investigation Findings Report (PIFR). These improvements aim to restore hydraulic capacity, protect critical infrastructure, and enhance public safety during high‑flow events. As a rural watershed of approximately 20,000 acres, the project will provide substantial community benefits by reducing closures, safeguarding utilities, and improving resilience across Colorado City and Hildale.
