Smith Wash (WFPO)
Project Description
The Smith Wash Watershed Project will address recurring flood risks in central Pinal County, Arizona, where storm events have caused damaging runoff, erosion, and impacts to local infrastructure. The watershed experiences concentrated flows that exceed the capacity of existing drainage features, creating hazards for nearby roads, utilities, and properties. The completed Preliminary Investigation Findings Report (PIFR) shows that viable measures exist to reduce flood impacts and improve public safety.
The project’s purpose is flood prevention, focused on restoring safe stormwater conveyance, stabilizing erosion‑prone areas, and helping protect community infrastructure during large storm events. The PIFR confirms that feasible alternatives can be developed to reduce flood damage and that no insurmountable obstacles prevent the project from moving forward into full planning. These improvements aim to strengthen long‑term flood resilience for residents, reduce storm‑related disruptions, and support safer roadway and utility operations throughout the Smith Wash Watershed.
