Red Water Wash – Chinle Wash (WFPO)
Project Description
The Red Water Wash – Chinle Wash Project near Many Farms aims to modernize deteriorated agricultural water infrastructure within the Many Farms Chapter of the Navajo Nation in Apache County, Arizona. The watershed includes more than 17 miles of aging open‑earthen canals originally built in the 1930s to support local farming. These canals now lose large amounts of water through seepage, evaporation, and sediment buildup, leaving Navajo producers with unreliable irrigation supplies and reduced crop productivity.
The project proposes replacing failing canal segments with improved irrigation systems to increase water‑delivery efficiency, reduce losses, and restore soil health across Tribal agricultural lands. By addressing erosion, sedimentation, and infrastructure decline, the project supports long‑term agricultural resilience for the Many Farms community. The effort will help revitalize traditional farming practices, strengthen local food production, and ensure that water resources are managed more effectively in a challenging, drought‑prone environment.
