Granite Creek - Upper Verde River (WFPO)

Project Description

The Granite Creek - Upper Verde River Watershed Plan and Environmental Assessment Project is in Yavapai County, Arizona, and surrounds (and includes) the City of Prescott. The purpose of the project is Flood Prevention with Watershed Protection as a significant secondary purpose. The project prioritizes flood prevention and mitigation projects for the Town of Chino Valley, City of Prescott, and other areas of unincorporated Yavapai County in the watershed. The project is needed to address damage to land within the watershed because of frequent and severe flood events and to reduce interruptions to access residential and agricultural lands associated with flood events. The preferred alternative combines a range of structural and nonstructural measures to address flooding, erosion, habitat connectivity, and groundwater management challenges within the project area. This alternative focuses on improving key “problem areas” identified by the NRCS and sponsors as being significantly impacted by watershed deficiencies. Core components include hardening the surface of Perkinsville Road with erosion control features, designing upgraded culverts (to potentially be locally funded), and modifying fencing to support safe wildlife passage. Additional flood prevention measures include construction of a flood control channel along Cemetery Draw, installation of breakaway fencing in Santa Cruz Wash to deter unauthorized ATV use, and improvements to the Willow Creek levee.
