Gila Valley Watershed (WFPO)

Project Description

The Gila Valley Wash Plan Environmental Assessment (Project) is located in Graham County, Arizona, within the broader Gila Valley. The purpose of the Project is to improve, modernize, and augment existing drainage and irrigation conveyance infrastructure to reduce flood risks, enhance agricultural water management, and support long‑term watershed resilience throughout the Gila Valley. There is a need to reduce flood impacts to agricultural lands and nearby communities, improve conveyance capacity in antiquated canal systems, address sedimentation issues, and increase reliability and efficiency in the movement and use of water resources.

The Project will provide structural and operational improvements across multiple sites to better manage stormwater flows, reduce sediment deposition, and improve water quality. Localized improvements, such as canal rehabilitation, diversion structure maintenance or replacement, construction of low‑crested weirs and spillways, and installation of automated flow‑management. These upgrades will help protect farmland, safeguard transportation corridors, reduce recurring maintenance burdens, and improve irrigation efficiency for water users throughout the Gila Valley.
