Cemetery Wash (WPFO)

Cemetery Wash WFPO Project information

Project Description

The Cemetery Wash Flood Control Project is located in the eastern portion of the San Xavier District of the Tohono O’odham Nation, south of Tucson in Pima County, Arizona. The purpose of the Project is to provide flood damage reduction and sediment management improvements for residential, commercial, agricultural, irrigation, and transportation infrastructure within the Cemetery Wash Watershed. There is a need to reduce recurring flood and sediment damages, improve public health and safety, maintain reliable emergency and resident access during large storm events, reduce roadway overtopping and closures at key crossings including Mission Road and San Xavier Road, protect homes and community infrastructure, reduce sediment deposition in San Xavier Cooperative Association Farm irrigation channels and related drainage facilities, and improve the long-term reliability and maintainability of the watershed’s flood conveyance system. The Project would include construction of a flood retarding structure along Cemetery Wash upstream of the San Xavier community, together with downstream channel, culvert, roadway, drainage, erosion protection, access, and habitat restoration improvements to reduce peak flood flows, manage sediment, and improve flood resilience within the San Xavier District.
