Watershed Assessments

Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) watershed studies provide in-depth assessments of water quality, water availability, and soil concerns at a finer scale than national or regional assessments.

About CEAP Watershed Assessments

Map of the United States with locations of Conservation Effects Assessment Project watersheds assessments identified.

Water quality concerns related to agriculture affect private landowners, governments, and communities. Through CEAP Watersheds Assessment Studies, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) works with the USDA Agricultural Research Service and universities, farmers, ranchers and partners including other agencies, conservation districts, and watershed groups to measure the effects of voluntary conservation on water quality, water availability, and soil health in selected small watersheds across the nation.

There are currently 26 active watershed studies and special studies that focus on emerging conservation concerns (such as legacy sources, ephemeral gullies and groundwater recharge) or evaluating planning tools (such as vulnerability indices or precision conservation watershed assessment) across geographic regions. Findings from these studies strengthen the science base for effective voluntary conservation, improve conservation planning, refine outcomes assessment methods and tools, evaluate innovative practices and ultimately help USDA deliver more focused, strategic conservation opportunities to support productive agricultural lands and soil and water outcomes nationwide. Additional details on watershed studies are available on the CEAP Frequently Asked Questions page.

USDA Legacy Phosphorus Assessment Project

Water quality can be persistently degraded due to historical phosphorus sources. This new webpage features resources from USDA's Legacy Phosphorus Assessment Project, which leverages watershed research to advance legacy phosphorus understanding and support water quality improvements nationwide.
